Your Vintage Glossary: Is it vintage, antique or preloved?

The vintage world is full of specialised terms that carry slightly different meanings depending on cultural context, so let’s get on the same page. Here's a glossary of key vintage terms, with definitions that pulls on regional nuances across the UK, Europe, and the US.

Vintage

Definition: Refers to items typically 20 to 100 years old.. So yes 2000 is now VINTAGE.

In the UK, "vintage" used to refer mainly to second hand high-quality or designer pieces, particularly British heritage brands like Barbour or Liberty. However in recent years “vintage”, similarly to the US, is using the term more broadly to mean retro or second-hand.

Antique

Definition: Items over 100 years old, valued for their age, rarity, and historical significance. So in 2025, if your item pre-dates 1925 it is antique.

In the UK, "antique" often describes furniture, jewellery, and collectibles, reflecting British heritage. In the US, the term is sometimes loosely applied to vintage items, blurring the lines between vintage and antique. In Europe, antique items are often tied to specific historical periods, such as Art Nouveau or the Belle Époque, with an emphasis on provenance/ the period of which it can be attributed

Deadstock

Definition: Literally meaning dead + stock; unused and unworn stock from past decades. Items labelled deadstock often have their original tags or packaging. If you’re new to vintage shopping, using the term deadstock in your searches will mean you can get something from the 1960s that has never been worn.

In the UK, this is often referred to as "new old stock" and is prized for its rarity, particularly in niche markets like tailoring. In the US, deadstock is especially sought after in streetwear and vintage denim markets. In Europe, luxury deadstock is highly valued, particularly for fabrics and accessories from iconic French or Italian brands.

Preloved

Definition: Second-hand items, literally meaning the second person or third person to own the item. It is often associated with an item still in good condition. The item is under 25 years old.

In the UK, "preloved" is a popular term, reflecting the growing trend of reselling of past fashion trend clothes. In the US, it is sometimes used interchangeably with "second-hand," though less commonly.

Repro or Reproduction

Definition: New items crafted to replicate vintage styles, often with modern materials.

In the UK, repro is seen as an affordable way to embrace vintage aesthetics, popular in rockabilly and historical re-enactment communities. In the US, it appeals to niche groups, such as 1940s enthusiasts.

Upcycled

Definition: Vintage or second-hand items creatively altered or repurposed into something new.

Vintage-Inspired

Definition: Modern items designed with vintage aesthetics in mind, often mimicking the styles of past decades.
